PEACE BE WITH YOU, SCOTT
Our bandmate, our brother, our friend

Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist and co-founder Scott Larned passed away of a heart attack on April 24th, 2005 in Fairfax, Virginia while on tour with the band.

Scott was a leader, co-founder and, for years, the band's manager helping guide this thing through some tricky waters in the early goings. His swirling hammond organ and glassy piano trills captured the eighties-era sound backed up by a most effective growling Mydland-esque voice. He will be missed both on and off the stage. A memorial pajama party was held after the church service on Friday April 29th.

In hindsight it's amazing that Friday turned out so perfect. It's hard to plan anything while you're in the many stages of grief. Well, I think he would have been pleased at how everyone pulled together to make the day so wonderful. The service and memorial pajama party were a most appropriate send-off. Thanks to everyone who came and were there in spirit. The well-wishes online have been steadily coming in. Scott touched so many lives it was impossible to anticipate the volume of emotional outpourings in the in-box.

The Larned family was overwhelmed by the love you have all shown. People flew in from the farthest corners of the country to be there at Friday's service. The music was performed by Paul Bolger and Dave Allen of Mr. Blotto and was beautiful, bringing a tear to all eyes. The evening's memorial was held in an excellent brand new venue with a decades old name, the Kinetic Playground (some may remember the Dead playing at the original Playground in the 60's.) After Cornmeal's bluegrass set and some heartfelt tributes, Donna took the stage with DSO for a song. The jamming continued until after 4 A.M. when the entire assembled crowd sang We Bid You Goodnight, a perfect goodbye to our friend and colleague.

In lieu of flowers, the Larned family has asked that donations be made in Scott's name to the American Heart Association and, of course, to Scott's favorite charity, the Rex Foundation.

On a more personal note: When I first started working on this website for the band, Scott was the one with whom I collaborated. He would have been proud of the fact that I didn't end that last sentence with a preposition, for instance. In a previous but simultaneous life, he had been a teacher and the site became another student's paper to grade. One time in the early years he said to me, "I can trust you to write what I would and not have to proofread every word." And so I tried to live up to that compliment. I now knew at least part of my audience and spent many hours just trying to make Scott smile when he would check in. It had been a cinch...a silly photo, a casual inside joke...it wasn't hard to find something to say. Until this Sunday. The first thing that I thought was "what would he want me to say?" followed by the realization that without him I had no grade, no teacher and, worst of all, no friend to make smile. If the site seems not up to its usual caliber in the coming weeks, I apologize in advance for I have lost one hell of a creative mind to work with. (Sorry for that last preposition, Scott...)

A big personal thanks to everyone who came out to Martyrs' and helped raise over $15,000 for the G. Larned Port Education Fund and also to those who donated items and their time to help make this happen. Special thanks to Timothy Powell and Metro Mobile for recording the show to hopefully be released as a benefit CD. Also thanks to Dr. Barry for donating his fancy footwork to the fund and Stewball who called Bob Weir from the show to get him to donate a signed t-shirt (THANKS, BOBBY!) and the guy who handed us 4 fourth-row seats to a Cubs game. Suzy and Nej, you were invalauble. Beau, Ray, Front Row, Kari, Herdy, Prescott (by phone), Tiny, RW, Nick, Cam, Bryan, Debbie, Sco, Norman, Rob, Tyler and so many I'm forgetting...thanks to everyone from the Larned family, DSO and myself...Let's do this again sometime!
