15 Years of Dark Star Orchestra
Posted on: November 11, 2012
The entire Dark Star Orchestra organization wishes to recognize the exemplary commitment to ‘the music’ – and celebrate 15 years of Dark Star Orchestra. On November 11, 1997, this long strange trip began in Chicago with a dedicated and focused group of musicians that continued to evolve to the place we are today. Now having performed over 2100 shows, the band is as tight and as focused as ever, to continue to share the joy that the music of the Grateful Dead brought each and every one of us. We all thank you for enjoying the ride with us and for a decade and a half of support! And to answer the question of where we are and where we’re going – we started here (the recording of DSO’s first performance 11/11/97) to where we are going (the recording of DSO with Phil Lesh on bass).

Dark Star Orchestra and Phil Lesh have worked out what we are calling the Barraco/Chimenti Switcheroo. On December 6 - 9 DSO's Rob Barraco will join Phil Lesh, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring and John Molo for a return of Phil Lesh and Friends...The Q! This all-star cast will perform four rare and intimate shows that will take place at Phil Lesh's new concert venue, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA. With December 5-8 being the last four nights of Dark Star Orchestra's Fall Tour, the Phil Lesh camp is sending keyboardist, Jeff Chimenti to fill in for Rob Barraco.
These special shows include: Dec 5 – The Egg in Albany, Dec 6 – State Theatre in Portland, ME, Dec 7 The Dome at Oakdale – Wallingford, CT, and Lowell Auditorium - Lowell, MA. DSO is very excited to work together with the Phil Lesh camp at this capacity and are equally excited to perform four shows with our guest keyboardist, Jeff Chimenti.

Phil Sits In With Us At The Philmore

As our six guys and girl continue a rip roarin’ West Coast tour, the highlight of the tour took place the second of two nights at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore, where Phil Lesh joined DSO for the entire first set on Saturday (10/13). The set kicked off with a smokin’ “Jack Straw,” “Here Comes Sunshine” and “Feel Like A Stranger” before setting off for the stratosphere with jamming worthy of the finest of second sets. From the opening notes of “Dark Star” to the set closing “Morning Dew”>”Playing In The Band (Reprise)” the band was on fire as Phil dropped his signature bombs all over the stage. Thanks Phil!
Burlington On; Peekskill Off

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Fall Tour East Peekskill, NY stop at the Paramount Center For The Arts on November 20 has been canceled. But the good news is that means DSO gets to go back to the Higher Ground in Burlington, VT, giving one of our favorite haunts a second go round in 2012! Peekskill tickets can be returned to point of purchase, and keep checking DSOtix for Burlington tickets. To stay on top of all DSO comings and goings, keep taking regular trips to the Tour Page.

It’s T for Texas as the Dark Star Orchestra tour bus is gassed up and ready to head out on Fall Tour 2012, starting on the last Thursday of the month in Houston and wrapping up with two nights in Boulder in late-October. In between, our six guys and a girl hit Austin, Dallas, Santa Fe, Flagstaff, Tempe and Las Vegas, before heading to the Golden State, where there are shows in LA, Solano Beach, Nevada City, Redwood City, Napa and two nights at The Fillmore in San Francisco! If that isn’t enough, the road then leads through Reno and Salt Lake City before the grand finale in Colorado. Tickets are available for most shows here.
Jubilation At The Jubilee, Fall Tour Next
Posted on: September 05, 2012
The first Dark Star Jubilee took place over Labor Day Weekend and even though Hurricane Isaac made an unwanted appearance, both performers and festival-goers had a great time as a group of thousands of Grateful friends pulled together to make the weekend one for the ages. After Day One – which closed with the first of three DSO shows – came off without a hitch, Isaac dropped buckets of rain on Legend Valley, rendering the Main Stage unusable. But never fear, our crack equipment crew got to work to transform the Second Stage into Main, while the VIP tent hosted the makeshift Second Stage. From there all the performances came off almost without a hitch, the notable exception being that due to equipment constraints, the Mickey Hart Band Late Night performance was morphed into a giant Drum Circle, with Mickey leading everyone on site into a spiritual realm that put the “legend” in Legend Valley. Thanks to the crew, the performers and – especially – you, the fans, who made DSO’s foray into the festival fray legendary and memorable!
Next up is Fall Tour 2012, with the West swing starting in Texas and winding through California, before winding through stops that include San Diego, L.A. and San Francisco, before finishing up in late-October in Boulder, CO. After that it’s a short break for our six guys and a girl, before they start up the East Coast part of Fall Tour in mid-November, starting with our first ever Canadian show, and making stops at Penn’s Peak, the Best Buy in New York and D.C.’s 9:30 Club. Tickets for most shows, including the recently announced Cosmic New Year’s Tour, can be found at DSOtix.
The Jubilee Starts Now!

Those tents dotting the hillside at Legend Valley in Thornville, OH mean that the first Dark Star Jubilee is underway, with three Dark Star Orchestra shows only one of the highlights as 24 other bands, including the Mickey Hart Band, 7 Walkers featuring Bill Kreutzmann, Keller Williams, Jorma Kaukonen, The Infamous Stringdusters, Donna The Buffalo, Dumpstaphunk, Boombox, Jahman Brahman, Jeff Mattson with the Donna Jean Godchaux Band, and our very own Matt Reynolds take the stage over the next three days. You can pick up your tickets at the gate, so load the car with your choice of food and beverages (no glass bottles, please) and your family and head out to The Jubilee, where Fan-friendly security and safety teams are excited to work with you. You can use small charcoal & small propane grills at your campsite and - best of all - you can camp right in front of the stage while you take in three days of jammin' music with most of the comforts of home. There's not a second to spare, so hit the road and we'll meet you at The Jubilee !
